The ball bearing carrier bearing usually will show less spin loss with no torque input, try a spin loss test with 500-600 lb-ft of torque input plus the tapered bearing will not have as much fore and aft movement (loss of preload). Instead of ball bearings you could use anualar contact bearing. Don't forget that the pinion carrier has load in both directions accel and coast!
