has anyone seen any et and mph benefits on retarding the timing back once in high gear or even at a certain higher rpm range ,, i am going to install a micro switch on my shifter and tie it into the 6al plus that can retard as much as 10*

On my 71' 402 low comp.stocker,I take out 4* after it's in high gear.Seems to be worth a couple of ticks and almost a mph...gsa612

back in the early 70's I took out 3-7 depending on the air in 3rd or 4th gear of my Z-28. Used an off set dual point distributor and switches on the shifter. Helped a few numbers and MPH, but most of all it let me run real high timing in low and second gear where it needed it.
Ed Wright remember those days??

We ran the dual point deal in 71, 283 / 245 and 250..Hard to nail down the ET improvement , but the MPH was there to see.
I would look at more than flipping a switch in high gear, in this day and age ;-)

Now, with my FAST XFI & crank trigger, I do it in my ECM. No switches to retard it. Now triggered by the RPM drop at the shifts. I found what high gear timing ran the most MPH, I add 4 in low gear, pull 2 of that in second, pull last 2 on the 2-3 shift. I can shut that function off with a toggle switch on the dash. I leave it shut off in “bracket mode”. Only on if I need to qualify higher, or for a heads-up. Now, since I’m so old, I have try to remember if it should be on, or off. LOL

Running higher timing helps the car launch harder but might be harmful down track...
Many years ago a friend I knew had a very famous and winning BB Chevy II SS'er and it came with a little instruction sheet for the timing.. It was a 396 with closed chamber heads and they liked high timing.. The sheet spec'd 54 degrees and was retarded with each gear change. It was a Turbo 400..... I used to use drastically lower timing when track conditions were not good to try and hook better....it did make a difference....so it would work the other way too. Has to be tried to see if it works....the ET slip tells the story..

I would expect at least as much gain with an SS car. Bigger cams (like for an SS engine) likes (in my experience at least) like more timing in low gear. At least an automatic car.
Works for me. Five hundredths for my car. And, the gains, for my car, came from adding timing in low gear, not just retarding in high gear.
