If your joists run across the ceiling left to right, perhaps you could position a lift like this one so that the top beam is in the space between two joists?

I had a 9 foot ceiling in my garage and had it raised 2 feet. Works really well.

I have a friend that just bought a very good quality movable scissors lift and used it to R&R the transaxle on his son's Monte Carlo. Said it worked really well, lifted the car high enough (he and his son are around 6-feet), and was a Godsend, given the complexity of the job. I think every lift configuration is a compromise, in one way or another. I have a two-post, above ground, and it's certainly nice to have, but it has definite drawbacks.

Larry ,I've got one of these lifts at home for the race car , but it works great on almost anything . and it is portable.
Had it since 2012 ,no problems .

I bought a Max Jack lift from Rineharts Performance at a great price (and they can have it shipped to you). They told me it would be the best tool I ever bought and I would wish I bought it sooner. They were right.

Lots of YouTube videos on install and options for setup. I had no DIY install issues and it works great.

I did have extra lines made to run my hydraulic lines across the ceiling, to remote locate the pump. No tripping over anything, which is the only negative with the setup as it comes, but that was personal preference.

I have a regular height, basic 2 car garage, and the Maxjax has two heights with safety pins. When in the high position, you can sit on a stool and roll around and work under the car easily.

I just bought a Max jack for my garage from all places home depot. Got a discount and 18 month no interest payment. I'm retired auto tech with 50 years in the field .Will lift 6000 lbs. to approx. 4 ft. works very well and doesn't restrict working in center of car like some do. I also have a 8 ft. ceiling.

That's what I did worked out great can raise the car high enough to stand under. Cut a 4x8 section and raised two rafters gen 3&4 roof fits perfect.
