Dick Oldfield posted elsewhere that Tom has guillian barre syndrome. It is some sort of nerve disorder.

After inaccurate reports earlier today that Mr. Hoover was in dire straights comes good news!
From Joe Pappas: Well, thank heaven it isn't true. Tom (Coddington) talked to Tom Jr. He is still progressing slowly. Discovered it wasn't Gillium Barr but a relative. They have him on another medication now. He couldn't take it before because his kidneys were weak but they are better now. Tom Jr thinking of moving him to another facility where they handle this. Slow process.
