doesn't look like the ones with the 2 rods going along the top of the cheaper ones would work very well with slicks? Has anyone used these?

I've used these types (not for 12" + wide slicks though). Purchased at Menards(likes Lowes etc.). Finally gave out on 1972 Chrysler Imperial. I guess those weight limits have some validity.

someone used to make a 4-wheeled frame that a jack stand would fit into, can't remember who, maybe the concept didn't work very well.

Had a friend buy the dollies and jack stands from Harbor Freight, he welded the jack stand to the dollies (took some trimming) then used motorcycle tie downs to ensure the car was firmly tied to the jack stands.
Worked for him!
