Default Questions about building a stocker

I am thinking about building a 67 mustang for stock eliminator. I don't know a great deal about it other than the very basics. My car is a coupe and I was wanting to build a 390 car. What class could i run with that combo.
I was looking for any tips or suggestions to help get me started. Maybe some suggestions of people that I could contact that could help me out. I live in Virginia, and I called a couple of local machine shops about discussing a motor for stock and they had NO clue. I know I am not going to go out there the first year and set the would on fire just looking to put a mild combo together to get my feet wet, something that will run maybe .5 under. As you can see any help would be greatly appreciated.
