OBD II Code reader

I need to buy a code reader/scanner for use on my bussiness and family cars. We own Ford,GM,and Chrysler cars ranging from 1996 - current. I see many advertised in the 100-300 range, but have no first hand knowledge of their worth. If I can get codes out to narrow down the area to look when a ck light comes on,that wouldhelp me alot. Some of these scanners may have the ability to check data /sensor voltage.

If you have used one you like, let me know, any advice is appreciated. Probably want to spend 500 or less
