Default bench testing a e shift controller

Is there a way to bench test a e shift controller? I had heard you could use a msd tester. I know you can rig up a 12 volt battery to check for power but not sure about the inputs and outputs. I picked up 2 extras for 50.00 at a swap meet last winter and figured I would chance it if they worked or not for that price.
