For a small block car especially, in class racing a 3 speed is usually quicker than a two speed. Class racing engines usually have a fairly narrow power band, it's hard to take advantage of the things that make a PowerGlide quick and efficient with a narrow power band.
Once you get to a TH350 with aluminum drums, and lightweight geartrain and shafts, the next step up gets real expensive, the next 0.04 in ET could cost you upwards of $3K above what the TH350 costs.
