Re: Remember when we had to leave the pits ?
I remember the streakers at the campgrounds at the Grove. One night we were sitting at a picnic table even Greg X was there. And a couple of streakers went by us.

Re: Remember when we had to leave the pits ?
I can remember driving to Indy in 71, when my brother and I where broken down on the side of the road with his 1969z/28 with a dead ignition and all of a sudden Don Prudhomme Stop with his car Hauler(he was in a station wagon chaser) his whole crew got out and started working on the car and got us back on the road with an extra tune up(I think the car pick up a second) Don didn't want to see anyone miss the show, a hell of a nice thing to do. Never forgot it, many years after I had a chance to talk with Don, and he remembered stopping. He had said "sure I remember your brother, I still can't believe he could actually fit in that car. My brother was hard to forget at 6'6" and built like a linebacker(he could barely fit in a helicopter as a Pilot)

Re: Remember when we had to leave the pits ?
been there...done that... had a damn good time too !!!
stayed at the capri motel jim shaehcter... changed a hog head ring & pinion... next year same room still smelled like rear end grease !!!! the DRIVE IN... man i could go on forever... one year state troopers tried to break up the "beer swilling, arm wrestling, beer burnout, show us your **** orgy" and the bikers turned one of thier squad cars on its side... they kind eased up after that however several arrests were made of course that was back when a biker, young pup could afford a ticket... nowadays its only a rich mans spectator game captain jack... been at indy since 1974... last raced in 2008 when they killed wallys dream. ...hell i still sleep under the suburban when ive had too many barley pops !!

Re: Remember when we had to leave the pits ?
1985. July long weekend. Friends racing at Sanair at the Nationals- me in Halifax. Saturday morning before I left for work at the speedshop, a guy shows up to buy my '74 360, 4 sp Cuda-16000 original miles. I had $8000 cash!!!
I called a friend to drive me to the airport around 5:00 pm. I buy a one-way ticket for Montreal and arrive there around 9:00pm. Start looking for a hotel- nothing available because of the long weekend. Resolve to hang around the city all night and find a way out to the track in the morning. Around 11:00 pm I see a friend of mine from Halifax staggering around St. Catherine's St.!!! He's there because he won a weekend trip from his job and he's got a room- I have a place to crash. We hit a few of the clubs to watch some 'dancers' Slept for about 3 hours. Got up around 7:00 am to look for a way out to the track. Found out that one of the city buses would take me most of the way- but then I'd be on my own. Managed to thumb a ride the rest of the way with someone else heading to the track. Got to the track as my friends were eating breakfast and getting the car ready for eliminations. I believe they won Superstock that year- Greg Nickerson SS/EA Camaro. I know there's no motel thrash involved here, but it was one of the best weekends- racing or otherwise- of my life. |

Re: Remember when we had to leave the pits ?
Quote:
I remember a girl getting a tray of beers. She had on a 2 piece bathing suit. Someone came up behind her as she was carrying the tray, and pulled down her bottom. It fell all the way to her ankles. Now if this was to happen in the states she would have tossed the tray and reached for her bottom. Not this girl she placed the tray down ever so gently (not spilling a drop), then proceeded to pull up her bottom. Pick up the tray and walk away.

Re: Remember when we had to leave the pits ?
Great story and pics. I was born in 72 and wasn't young enough to have had the opportunity to enjoy "the good ole days".
