A friend who ran a small block modified production Corvette ran just the inner part of balancer. R&M told him it went through the Rs so fast it didn’t need a ‘balancer’ this was in the late 60s and 70s. Never blew an engine either of course Allen could drive that car!

My experience with those were with two Moroso Alum. Balancers that were installed on 468 cu. in. Big Block Chevy engines. Both cranks failed in less the 50 runs. One scattered pretty good. Second got inspected after the first one blew up and was caught, crank cracked in the #8 rod journal leading into the rear main journal. Second engine got a new crank and balanced with a Good GM Balancer (at the time ) and no further problems were were noted. Never used one myself, but Moroso stopped selling those balancers and I haven't seen any others in use. I would be very skeptical in using one. Just my observations over the last 40 years of playing with High Performance engines. In maybe a very short stroke engine ( 3 inches or less ) for very short durations of running, But in todays world I can't justify possibly sacrificing a good race engine for something like that. Just my two cents from a little Island here on the East Coast. Respectfully, Henry Kunz 1534 H/SA |
