Having a convo with another person as they were asking about dingleberry hone grit. He said someone told him to use an 800 grit ball hone. Seemed to fine to me. I would normally use a 400 on our bracket motors. What's yalls opinion on the 800? Assume moly or latest tech total seal rings

You'd panic then when the tech guys at Total Seal suggested finishing with 1000 grit levigated aluminum, counterclockwise for five strokes.

Alan, if that's what they recommend then I would do 1000. I have been taught if it's too slick the rings wont seal. 400 works great on a bracket motor with no risk of a ring not sealing. I've never used anything finer but I know on a stocker motor that a ring combo can make or break you. That's why I asked.

Like Alan said, call Total Seal and speak to Keith.
Piston ring material and technology has changed drastically. We are no longer in the era of breaking-in Chrome rings. |

This is what I've seen with my Mitutoyo SJ-210 profilometer after doing 20-ish strokes in clockwise direction, and 5-ish strokes counter-clockwise, with 400 grit silicon carbide hone, on Darton sleeves. In other words, excellent results. Mileage may vary. |
