I know this might be a lame subject but I'm gonna post it up, better than hearing guys argue about old and new class cars.
I just left my garage after starting my old Torino after an oil change and man I tell you, I have never heard a better sounding Hydraulic Flat Tappett cam in all my years of following class racing. When I put my Torino back together I was trying to do it on a budget. My racing dad and friend for life John Douglas helped me build my new engine. When discussing cam choices he says to me I have two brand new cams that you can choose from but they are identical lol. John ran a 72 HO Mustang in H/S and had two brand new in the box Cam Dynamics Hydraulic Flat tappet cams. I was skeptical at firsrt because these cams were/are low lift, smaller than the old solid Crane I ran but at $50 I couldn't go wrong. Wow! Man this Cam Dynamics Hydraulic sounds so damn good! The average Joe thinks it is a roller and when I tell them it's a hydraulic flat tappet they can't believe it. My last one is the shaft I had in my old Super Stock Cleveland. I fought that thing for about a year trying to make it work but I came to the determination it wouldn't work with an automatic. I tell you what though, that Lunati Solid Roller sounded like popcorn. I still have it and I plan on using it some time in the near future. It may not work but I can guarantee you one thing, it might scre someone into thinking it's fast cause it sounds good lol! Have a good night friends! |

Some of the 305 SBC stockers have a bad azz sound.
The 5.7-6.1 Hemi has a really nasty sound, and it should considering the compression and cam it has.

Well we have discovered one thing for sure ,and that is everybody likes their own camshafts as their (our ) choice.
Now , for the best looking 4-door stocker , i personally like the 66 Chevy II.. (wonder why?) lol

Seems to me not only the cam but the headers make a distinct sound. The lighter the gauge the better, merge collector makes the pop a lil cleaner as well with the square lobe. On my oldsmobiles I like to hear the John Deere tractor roll (overlap) thats what I call it, then I know I have everything close LOL

Yea I'm partial but an AMC sounds wicked! I can't count how many times some trackside "expert" has come up and told me how much faster I'd go if I didn't take the RPM up so high. My D/S engine barely hit 6800 RPM and they would tell me I was leaving and shifting at around 8500 RPM. This SS/H engine was only good for about 7200 RPM.
But the next engine may be quite a bit higher... ![]() Try these! http://www.youtube.com/user/superstockamx#g/u
