Is a 26" tall front tire going to be big enough for a F-Body Lt1 Stocker. A buddies dad bought some and needs a 24". I was wondering if you guys are running a 27" or 28" or if these 26" will work fine for me?
Thanks for any help Chris |

Most of the F bodies I build have 26" tires on them.
I would have liked a taller tire on the one I drove to slow down my reaction times, but tire clearance is a little tight. Even with the 26" tire you will have to trim out the top of the inner fender, or the track crew will be following you after a wheelstand to pick up whats left of the liner. I have put 27" tires on one car I did, but we did have to raise the front end a little to keep them from hitting even when making a slight turn.

You might ask around. We were running a 28" for a while and it was a little tight, but I think many are running one now. This is on a '98 Firebird. We are running a 27" now and plenty of room with the factory fender liners.

27" tires rub on mine when turning very sharp. Lower cars will rub sooner.

I will agree with Don on this . ask around.
Front springs, and different wheel offsets and especially tire manufacturers will make a difference. Goodyears 28" front has a bigger rollout than Hoosier or M/T. ....but the Hoosier 27" is bigger than the Goodyear . The 26" tires seem to be closer among the manufacturers.

When I put together my LT-1 Firebird....I replaced the front fender liners as the one on the car were all scraped up. It never occured to me why they were all torn up!
I had 26 or 27" front tires and single adjustable front shocks. They were set loose.....and the nose was pretty low Tom Goldman mentioned to me before I made my first run that the tires would tear up the plastic liners........They did on the very first run and the car was so slow it could barely get out of it's own way! When I got on the brakes the nose dropped and the tires ripped the liners up.......Wasted a lot of time and a few dollars learning that one........ I raised my car a good deal by raisng the spring seats and still had the issue of the nose tripping the beams twice..... I highly recommend either a double adjustable front shock or a down travel limiter device.....

agree, 27" tires here
![]() but come down hard from a wheels up launch and you'll leave the inner liners on the track. Done that twice now, ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by 1320racer; 01-17-2011 at 08:23 PM. |
