Default Aluminum 12 bolt spool

I have a steel 12 bolt 33 spline strange spool and an aluminum one.

Would the gear back lash or side clearance be different from steel
to aluminum because of the difference in expansion from aluminum to steel rates?

Any advice will be good thanks!

Glen

And I have a Moser 33 spline 12 bolt steel spool with bearings for sale $150 or B.O.

Guess it depends on how hard your car leaves, but I cleaned the splines out of the right side on the starting line at a national event at Memphis once. Jerry Hass had been with a customer 's Hemi 'Cuda parked across from me. Jerry walked over to ask what broke. Told him I didn't know yet. (Just got out of the car). He was standing on the starting line when I staged. He asked me how many axle splines. I told him 33. He said "Not an axle, aluminum spool?" I said "Yes sir." He replied you cleaned the splines out that side." He asked if I had a steel spool, and if I did what was it? I replied that I did, it was a lightened Strange. He said "There is not 5 lbs there." That he preferred to not use aluminum spools in cars like mine. I put the steel one back in. It was less than 5 lbs difference. It ran no faster with the aluminum spool, not one bit. That failure was 1st round of eliminations, and I had the better light before it headed for the tree. I 'll not use another one. 5lbs in the tires is one thing. Much larger radius. Small circle like a spool? I can 't tell that it is. Lots of guys have them & think they need them. Doubt many back-to-backed them like I had. I left it in there figuring it just HAD to be worth SOMETHING! LOL

If you are switching from a Steel spool to a Aluminum one. You need to check and make sure the splines on your axles are long enough. The steel spool does not have splines all the way to the outside end where the alum one does. I had to send my axles back to Moser and have the splines made longer. Hope this helps and saves you a headache.
