I was wanting to know what rear gear lube everyone is running is stock...
I pulled my gears out this week and found broke tooth on ring gear and am now putting all new in and i want to know what works best ...thanks in advance for any info Bryan stk5010 |

I've always used regular gear oil with limited slip with my spool w/o any problems. Many of the Mustangs that run the NMRA and the 8.8 Ford rear have very good success with Redline Synthetic gear oil. The shock additives are superior. Many of these guys run 4-5spds.

How many runs, how fast and what is the weight of the car. The lube has less to do with early failure than, improper setup. If you are using the Richmond street gears or something similar, they never get the proper break in they need and are a little too hard for a fast drag car. Although it would be totally impractical, if you could put a few thousand street miles on a properly setup Richmond street set before it went into the race car, it would last much longer. Most of the fractures that become failures are born on the first few runs.

What weight gear oil for summer use? Why do you run limited slip additive? Thanks!

The car weighs 3245 and gear set is 7 or 8 years old and was due to be changed just wanting to know if synthetics are the way to go or not thanks

The oil probably doesn't have anything to do with broken teeth. Proper set up is important. You could try having the ring and pinion Cryogenicly treated. It will help extend the life of the gears. Jim Bailey does this. www.finishedracing.com

Mark Williams recommends 75-140 Richmand Synthetic gear oil. Sells for about $9.00 a quart. This gear oil is GL-6 rated! You can go to any auto parts store and find 5 rated gear oil. GL6 rated oil is hard to find. This oil is excellent and it helped ring gear life. This oil is blue in color and can be reused. GL6 rated oil is the best! It is just that simple.

Send your new ring & Pinion to Bailey, get the treatment, make sure your brace on the housing is good, triple tighten the U bolts. I assume you have a 742 housing and spool. We use Royal Purple, and since I used Jim the first time 4 or so years ago, have not broke on in my 69 6 pak, or any of the new Challengers. Hope this helps.

Still have a couple of gallons of whale oil I use with a friction modifier. No issues

I believe the MW oil is Torco. I have had good results with Lubrication Engineers LE 607 and the newer LE1605. Even with pro gears, I like to put a few miles on them (30-50) before racing, if possible.
