Default Placement of oil accumulator

OK, here's question. BBC with oem "old style" block with oil rail running down side of block. Would it be better to have accumulator feed running into front of block straight into oil rail and get oil ASAP to front mains or tie it in back above oil filter? Or will it even make a difference?

Terry, if you hook it up to the front, it will see the oil pressure drop earlier, since that is the farthest point from the pump. That's where I like to hook up a quick response oil pressure gauge, too.

But if pump runs out of oil (sucks air) the first one from pump will get the air. On a Ford 1 & 5 will always be bad if pump runs out of oil they are first to get oil from pump!

Ed,
If you're talking about the gauge, I like the -4 fast response kit from AutoMeter.

If you're talking about the accumulator, I like to use -10 if possible, or even -12.

Ralph, I don't normally have trouble with a pump sucking air, I've been fairly successful in getting my pans worked out. Besides, you lose oil pressure fastest from the farthest point from the pump on a big block Chevy in most cases.

If you feel that you must use one, put the line in so that it keeps the filter full and you will not have a problem. On the majority of BBC stockers, if you use the proper oil filter, the proper size restrictors in the block, and the proper sized/volume oil pump, you will not need an accumulator. There is plenty of volume for a 9 to a 12 second pass. Of course your pan will have to be baffled to keep from losing pressure on severe braking.

For you all that run an accumulator...

Are you all reducing the amount of oil in the pan?

For example, I usually run five quarts in my seven quart pan and have a three quart accumulator, for a total of eight quarts. Would it be advisable to run even less in the pan? If so, how much less?

I have a SBF and run a Dart Iron Eagle block. The accumulator is run to the -10 fitting at the front of the block.
