Thumbs up Re: American Motors Cylinder Heads

The 4488895 casting was a service replacement for the 3196291 '70 360"-390" motors. ....It has a slightly stronger casting at the 90 deg machined areas at the end exhaust ports . ....I was replacing them on cars under warrenty back then because that area was prone to cracking .......This is an excellent head with very little work. ...I used many of them back in the mid '70s for my B/SM Javelin and other bracket motors. .....I have a heavily ported set on the shelf , they were as fast as some of the new ported aluminum heads ,but we got a little thin on the exhaust roof ,and the engine tends to run a little too hot .................Tom

There are many reasons for some of the discrepencies in the casting #'s over the years . .....The problem is that there is little in the way of documentation to support some of the odd casting #'s that exist . .......I've got a few castings that the #'s dont appear anywhere in either NHRA specs or anywhere else for that matter. .....I think there are at least 3 versions of the 291 casting alone...........some AMC sites state that the 291 casting came after the 895 in '70 production, altho I distinctly remember getting the 895's as replacements back in the early to mid '70's. ......Tom
