are these legal in stock? (nhra, i guess i'd better be specific)

and if a guy is hunting anyway, is a 489 case prefered over a 742?
i've got a 741 but ther ain't much for gear selection

Yes these are legal, I prefer the 742 over the 489, some racers have broken the caps on the 489.

Why spend the money to design a new case and not but billet caps on it.

The 741 is not a good choice, they're weak, spider gears break easily, lack of gear selection and the pinion shaft is smaller.

If you are going that route $172 is a good price, Dr Diff in Montana gets
about $250 for the same empty diff.

I researched the 8 3/4" Posi Units that are now on the market through EBay and other differential outlets, and found that they are manufactured in India.

Randys ring and pinion has been selling them for years, if you get one use a solid shim instead of the crush sleave.
