I was wondering if you can bore out lifter holes and put in larger lifters and/ or put bushings in them. Question two can i put 4 bolt mains in a 2 bolt main block. Question three can i use a gridle on my mains to tie them all together. Question four can i use tubing to redirect the oil back to the oil pan. Question five can i use a windage tray. This is for a 1986 J/SA 305 Camaro NHRA rules thanks

1. Bushings, yes. Larger diameter lifters, no.
2. Yes, but you won't need them on a 305 Chev. 3. See 2 above. 4. No 5. Yes |

OK. Thanks for the info i really needed those answers. Forgot one can i put small tubing in lifter valley in those holes where oil drips down on cam and crankshaft. Or can i plug them. thanks again

Yes.
Going back to your first post, if you want to build a strong base for a 305, start with a 350 4-bolt block and sleeve it back to 305 bore size. That work is no more expensive than adding 4-bolt caps and a girdle to a 2-bolt block and will benefit this combination much more than all the crank containment work. When was the last time you heard someone spitting a crank out of a SBC Stocker? When was the last time you heard someone complain about ring seal in a SBC stocker? 'Nuff said. Six or seven yrs. ago I did the 350 4 bolt sleeved 305. After all the work was done on the block I was told by NHRA that was not legal. My question, is this a legal modification now. I think I got 2 cases of beer for it? Jim |

I assumed that it was legal since there are so many sleeved 454s masquerading as 396s. Seems like last year in discussion the 4-bolt is not legal for the 305.

While we're on the subject, is there really much to be gained by indexing the lifter bores on a small block Chevy? I thought they were pretty darn close to right-on from GM.
