Default Looking for BBC intake suggestions

I'm trying to figure out what would be the best intake to use with my combo. It's not a Super Stock, but I thought you guys would have some good ideas. Engine is a 12 to 1 461 w/ open chamber rect. port GM cylinder heads.Heads have been professionally ported, but no welding or filling was done (class I ran at the time did not allow it). cam is 269/276 @.050, lift.685/692 solid roller. carb is 850 holley DP w/proform 1050 main body 4150 type.Current intake is holley strip dominator, headers are 2" hooker super comp hooked to 3.5" exhaust with dynomax ultra flo mufflers. 3500# w/driver 5200 stall converter,4.57 gear, 28" tire. I run in a heads up street car class which limits us to a 275-60-15 hard street (400 + treadwear rating - think BFG Radial T/A) so good trap speed is more important than hard launch. Car has run a best of 7.07 @99.6 eight mi.on hard tires w a 1.65 60' so far, but i could use a couple more mph on top end. Please help me stay ahead of the nitrous cars with my all motor 4 door wagon. All Ideas welcome!

Scott

Most of the edelbrock victor series manifolds are pretty good, but the peice you have now has taken a lot of super stockes to vitory. You could try extending the runners a small amount into the plenum, but if I were you I would think about a lot more cam, that would do wonders for you that no intake could come close to,besides a sheetmetal of course. We have a lot of old super stocker cams that are pretty close to what you have in duration, but about a .100 more lift that are peices we tested on the dyno and were maybe 2-4 horsepower down,if you are interested I could give you a good deal on one.I'm not trying to sell you anything, just trying to help out.I'm sure there are plenty of other big block guys that have the same thing if you know any super stock big block guys in your area.

Runners are already extended about 1/2"beyond as cast. I do find your cam suggestion interesting. How is valvetrain life with one of the superstock grinds. Our class rules say you can be required to make a short street cruise if one of your competitors feels your car is not street drivable,so my valvetrain needs to be somewhat durable. I'm about 75 min west of Indy, not too far from you, so I may be interested in cams you have. you can send info to sbunge1964@aol.com

Thanks, Scott

Current springs are 230# seat pressure so I'm sure they would have to go, as would retainers.I'd guess that a triple spring around 300# is needed. Even a cheap cam will turn into a $1500+ project.

As far as making a short street cruise I don't think it would be a problem, except for the gas mileage. Most of the superstock guys drive their cars up to the staging lanes and back to the pits after a run.If you did make a street cruise I would be sure to run the lash when finished, but that is something I would think you have to do currently with the cam you have now.As far as springs go a comp 947 would probably be the best choice,we also have many sets of those that instead of having 300 lb @ 2.100 they have 280 lb on the seat, they work great on bracket cars.Do you know what you valve clearance is with the cam you have now?

Edelbrock Victor Jr. , worked well for me. I ran 454 +.030, Speed pro 12.5 to open ch piston, .688 lift roller cam w/ dur somewhere around 270 and in 3100 lb Camaro went 6.60's. Intake was box stock, carb was 850 cfm, TH 400 trans 4200 stall. Heads were stock GM #990 LS7 castings w/2.19 &1.88 valves. I had been using box stock Holley Strip Domonator intake but wanted more/crisper bottom end.Headers were Hooker Super Comp 2 1/8".
Ran a best of 108 mph in 1/8 mile with that particular motor. 60' times were in the high 1.40's, using slicks.

Currently shift at 7300 and go thru lights at about 6100 in third (would probably be closer to 7400 on a quarter mile track). As best as i can remember without checking, valve to piston clearance is approx .120 intake and .140 exhaust. Present rockers are Crane aluminum rollers, stud mount. That Jesel deal sounds a little pricey for a budget street car class. How much spring pressure and lift could I get away with using stud mount rockers?

You can run the Crane roller rockers with a Super Stock roller cam but you need to change to the very high quality ARP rocker studs. There are several different ones offered but only one will last. They are sold in packages of 8 and have a longer shank that goes into the head. These may need to be trimmed to keep from bottoming out in the port roof. Use a good stud girdle and it will work fine. I have run this setup on Super Stock engines over 8000 rpm with no problems. Make sure you have plenty of spring pressure 350 to start and 300 minimum. Also make sure the pushrods are up to the task. Minimum .120 wall 3/8 dia. Otherwise flex will wreak havoc on your valvetrain.

You may want to look at opening up the LSA to 110 or 112 to make more top end power and take a little out of the bottom end. A 1 or 2 inch Wilson spacer will help too.

Good Luck!
