Default 4:88 gears

Looking at moving up to 4:88 on a 35 spline spool in a mopar 8-3/4 4.89 case.

Is it safe to shop for used stuff, or just better to spend the $$ for new and if so
who to go to?

I don't know the mopar stuff. But if it was me, I would go with new stuff.

If it was a Dana my recommendation would to try and find a good used gear. However with the 8.75 I think I would buy new, a good pro gear. My $.02.

Good Luck,

I purchased my 4.88, spool, 35 spline axles and bearing kit from Moser as a package. My solid pinion spacer came from Dr. Diff. All of it was less than a grand a few years ago. Dr. Diff has nice stuff and great prices for mopar stuff.

The secret to long life on an 8.75 is use billet caps and spanner adjuster. They're available from Mark Williams. Summer Brothers used to make them but I'm sure they're very difficult to locate. I think if you use all MW products in that rear you'll be much happier even though more money will be spent. My buddy Mark with his C/S '70 440-4 Challenger has a complete MW 8 3/4 rear with 4.88's. Launching with too much clutch pressure @ 6K has yet to show ANY abnormal wear.
I agree w/ 340 'Cuda, if it were a Dana 60 good used would be OK. I've done it myself. In fact the 4.88's I ran were previously in an A/S Max-Wedge car for 500+ runs and then in mine for a few hundred. Nobody knows how many runs they have seen but they still look perfect. I don't think I would try that for your rear though. Good luck!

stick or automatic ? i just did the rear in my car,i bought the spool used, new 35 spline axles, yukon 489 case(good for 750 horse and the cast is a stronger blend) 4:56 richmond gear, new 1350 yoke, like jeff said the main caps have been suspect for breakage and pulling the threads, thats the reason i went for the new case, plus after doing some measuring on the maincap diameter, the carrier bearing was still a little loose even when torqued to spec, check your case gmonde
