On this date 1979
4 November 1979- Iran, a mob overruns the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. 65 Americans, including Marine guards, are taken hostage. It isn’t until 20 January 1981, that the remaining 52 hostages were released after 444 days in capacity.

Re: On this date 1979
They were released to the Algierian government in Algiers. Then flown to Germany for medical treatment and testing. Then on to the States escorted by President Carter and welcomed by President Reagan. Before President Obama returned the Iranian money each US citizen that was held received of that money $10k times that number of days they were in captivity (10,000 x 444). I know a few Marines from their association with the Marine Embassy Guard Association, Kevin Hermening and his family are great people. He spent the majority of his time in solitary confinement.

Re: On this date 1979
Thanks Eddie, didn’t remember the captives receiving that money. Youngsters can’t imagine (and probably aren’t taught) about this episode in American history. They probably know more about the failed rescue mission than anything else (probably a PlayStation game). My wife was a aeromedical tech for several years and recognized the C9 tail numbers shown on the news “recovery” flights. What stands out in my memory about news reports were Walter telling us JFK was dead, Huntley/Brinkley giving us the weekly counts of Vietnam and also the alphabet news updating the number of days of their captivity. Watershed events all…

Re: On this date 1979
I remember it well.
I was stationed at 29 Palms in Nov. 1979. I also remember the rescue attempt the Marines attempted. Sand storm ruined that

All this and no mention of your fine neighbors to the north adorning the Maple Leaf?
