Default bench testing a e shift controller

Is there a way to bench test a e shift controller? I had heard you could use a msd tester. I know you can rig up a 12 volt battery to check for power but not sure about the inputs and outputs. I picked up 2 extras for 50.00 at a swap meet last winter and figured I would chance it if they worked or not for that price.

Yes they can be bench tested using an MSD ignition tester. You could wire in a 12 volt bulb or whatever to the outputs to test them.

Looking at my MSD igntion tester instructions and my e shift instructions, the controller needs a tach signal so I need to hook up an MSD 7al box with it to get the required tach signal. Is this correct?

Yes, that is correct sorry wasn't clear on that. You'll need an ignition box to feed the controller an RPM signal. Never tried using the MSD tester as a direct RPM signal, but it may work using the white wire hooked to the controller tach terminal.
