Smile 327 SS engine RPM range

Generally speaking, where would you expect the the max HP to be(RPM) in/on a well built 327 SS engine?

Terry, which carb? It can be equipped with the small Rochester, 585 Holley or Q-Jet

I can offer this feedback from my Super 10 build with the Quick Fuel 585 carb. It is very strong between 7200 to about 8400 RPM. It will buzz to 8800 or more but power is falling off quickly.

I only recorded a few runs before having a problem that caused major damage. I am in the rebuilding now but may not be able to run it this season.

To give a guide as to power, in my S - 10 at 3170 pounds in 90 degree air [3200 adjusted air] it ran a best of 10.40

The rebuild will have some improvements and I expect it to run 10.15 - 10.20 in the same conditions..

It's a matter of how much valve train maintenance you want to do and how far under you want to run and then gear accordingly.

Mike, saw your car leaving on the IHRA live feed from Bradenton, looks good!

The 9000 plus comment by Mike is correct but I do not want a package with such high maintenance.

My first design had a 6.0 rear gear and a cam design for under 8800 RPM. About the last 150 feet it was just buzzing along.

My second build has a 5.86 gear and the cam has 2* more lobe spread. In addition, at least 70 pounds lighter.

A large part of the fun for many of us is constant experimentation.

Thanks Jim. The track was perfect all weekend. The car was working exellent. I actually drove pretty good all weekend but the level of competition was awesome. We had 23 SS cars on Saturday and 22 on Sunday. Good turn out for a div 2 IHRA pro am.
