I noticed recently a majority of stockers that have fuel cells, battery boxes, batteries and weight boxes are BOLTED through the trunk floor pan with NO attachment to frame rails or other structural members. I also noticed not one trunk area was ever looked at underneath the car by a tech person. I am all for bolting through the floor pan if that is legal BUT is that ok ????

They DO look and it is definately NOT legal. I spent an afternoon in St Louis drilling and relocating weight in my Chevelle's trunk area so it attached to the frame like tech wanted. Not the best time or place to do that sort of work but we went to race, not to watch.
I don't know on a subframe type car like a Camaro or Nova what is acceptable but definately check with a tech guy before assuming something is OK because another person is doing it that way. TP |

Not legal, must be bolted or welded to frame.
I drill and sleeve the frame rails so I can bolt items on without collapsing the rail. You can also weld cross rails to the frame across the trunk floor and attach fuel cells ,batteries ,and weight boxes to them. I do that on cars with deep spare tire reliefs ,to keep the weight up higher.

Rusty, By and large, the tech guys are very reasonable. They are looking for something that is secure.
I have mounted 5 gal. fuel cells on a fabbed aluminum frame, through the trunk floor with large fender washers.. Never a problem with tech The 20 gal OEM tanks hang below, from sheet metal, with sheet metal straps, by the way. Weight boxes and batteries however ,must be bolted thru the frame or sub frame with a minimum of two half inch bolts, or secured as Tom suggested.
