My nova (74) came with power steering, I have been told I should switch it to one off a different car because of weight savings and it would be alot easier to steer at low speeds... What steering box would work???
Thanks in advance.. |

I don't believe those two boxes can be swapped. The 71 is a rear steer box and the 74 should be a front steer box. Hope I am wrong. I heard that a s10 box will bolt on? Not sure.

That wouldn't affect anything anyway, Robert. You just flip the pitman arm around 180 deg.

I have a S10 box and am planning to use it on a '69 Camaro. I haven't pulled the pitman arm yet but was concerned that the master spline on the box might prevent the arm from simply being turned 180 degrees. From what I've just read here this should not be a problem, right? Is a different rag joint needed to connect to the steering shaft? |

I have never used an S 10 box, but I would bet the steering shaft could be adapted using factory parts..It's the Vega that has the smaller shaft.

Thanks for the info Mark; now I'm more optimistic that the switchover will be straightforward.

I meant to add: All Saginaw boxes (60's -90's) have the the same bolt pattern to the frame.
