Do you guys run an alternator in your race car? If so, can you explain the set up? If not, can you explain how your wiring/battery set up is configured? I'm weighing the pros and cons to both.
Thanks, Jeff |

Yes, we run an alternator. They are one wire alternators, and charge through relays, so that they do not keep the engine running if the master disconnect is turned off.

I run a Powermaster 1-wire alternator on the 'wagon hooked directly to the positive side of the battery. Nothing fancy, but it meets the rules and I have had no run-on issues. Most aftermarket 1-wire units work basically the same way. I'm also using a 6 Amp battery charger after every round.

I'm looking at a Declo 50 amp idle / 105 amp WOT. It's bigger & heavier than the mini Denso 45 amp I had previously as I found an OEM Volvo electric fan & shroud that fits my radiator nicely. It should cool nicely but the draw is 40 amps extra over what I ran previously. The Delco alternator is 11.2 pounds vs around 5-6 pounds for the mini's. This is a 16 volt unit.
Anybody run a cog (not serpentine) alternator? Have a source? I found this http://www.blackmountainprecision.com/bb4.htm

Don't forget about the one way diode if you are using an MSD so that you'll be able to stop your engine!
