I was always told you had to have a stock (oem) base. I know one racer was told he could not run the K&N top filter also.

That seems stupid when you're allowed to run without an air cleaner.

You are right. That is silly. I have a single layer K&N filter that I run on my car and it slows it down a little. But it makes me smile when I am driving through the dusty pits in Div 4.

One of the East coast racers on this forum has pics of his engine with a air cleaner base that clearly is not oem, It's a 2 barrel combo so it's pretty easy to spot. He seems to be allowed to use it so maybe the old rule is no longer being enforced?. I believe GTX John was harassed for having a reproduction Mopar unit on his Demon at one time though.

Nhra rules says if an air cleaner is used it must be OEM or have the OEM configuration. Sounds like you take your chances if it's not OEM. Pretty silly. You can run valve springs as stiff as your front springs but don't change that air cleaner.

Air Cleaners:
Optional. If used, air cleaner must be OEM automotive or retain OEM configuration. Air cleaner base may be cut or trimmed, but welding, bolting, riveting, epoxying or other form of fabrication is prohibited. Ram tubes, velocity stacks or non-stock-type base plates or ducting prohibited. Cooling holes prohibited in radiator side panels, etc. Factory air cleaners and/ or scoops that fit through hood must be affixed to carburetor as per OEM only. .
