What are you all paying for Sunoco Purple?

How much are you paying for Purple by the drum? I had a guy quote me $415 or $7.65 a gallon which is $85 more than I paid in the spring [$330].

Last time I went to the pump, it was $7.05 a gallon. It's always fresh at this station also, it's right down the block from County Line Dragway.

Conventional wisdom would say that more octane would be slower in an engine that doesn't need it, BUT I think there must be some other properties about it that's better than the 110 Purple. We back-to-backed 112 Blue with C12 in Fisher's Mirada, and the E.T. didn't budge -- but it's cheaper, and more stable than the VP.

Mark, Sunoco blue runs fine, we switched from VP C-12, since C-12 got absurdly expensive, and would regularly fail fuel check right out of the new drum on the VP trailer at the race track.

While "extra octane" may in fact be "wasted", the HP effect people see, if they properly jet for changes in the specific gravity of their new fuel, is due to the burn rate, not due to octane. The various fuels have fairly widely varying burn rates. For example, some engines with only 12.2 to 1 compression ratio may see a HP gain by switching from C-12 to C-14+ or C-25, simply because the burn rate in the other fuels is what "makes their engine happy". You would not think that would happen, given the accepted theory that "extra octane is wasted", since C-14+ is rated for 14 to 1 compression, and C-25 is rated for 15 to 1, as well as high RPM (for Comp eliminator and Pro Stock). But it does.

I use to pay $7.00 a gallon at the station accross from Firebird. About two months ago it went up to $8.00. I just got some yesterday and it is still $8.00.

I always run the Purple110. Infineon said they sell Sunoco, so I did not bring any with me. Last year I got to the Divisional and found out they only have 112. I had to drain the fuel system and use the 112. I did not notice any change in performance or the A/F ratio with the 112. I run a low compression 360 in my Duster.

I had some old Purple and when I went to fuel check, it passed, but lost most of it's color. The tech official told me to put some fresh Sunoco purple so that he could identitfy it by the color that I was claiming. I'm thinking that it was at least 1 year old fuel, when I was at the PRI show, I spoke to a Sunoco Representative, he told me that it has a 2 year shelf live on the purple fuel.

What Alan said. There are more variables in fuel than just octane. Octane doesn't make power. Octane *allows* you to do different things with the engine that make more power. By itself, octane amounts to nothing more than "unburnable stuff", which allows you to run more ignition timing and/or compression without getting into detonation. Theoretically, the less octane the better, but again, you have to look at ALL of a fuel's attributes to determine it's efficiency and power potential in a given combination.
