Ok, I've got psychotic problems with my 89 mustang stocker. It sat on the trailer October to mid December, starting it once a month or so. I put it in the garage {started fine even with a likely low battery] , then I went to take it out of the garage to get into our attic, Nothing, no start. I THINK it made the same noise that it has ever since. Dddddddddddd, a fast metal buzz. I charged the battery, in fact I,m pretty sure it charged overnight at the 30 amp rapid setting on my almost new sears fully automatic charger. Tried to start it and the same noise. I thought maybe the charger stayed at 30 amps all night and fried the battery. New battery, same noise. I replaced the starter solenoid, same noise. I Moved the ground cable from the factory placement on the Alum t-chain cover to the head with a clean area, same results. I got a new starter, same results. Heres what may be my problem, I checked various wires to see if they were grounding, the solenoid to starter wire showed itr was grouning, I thought maybe it was the wire, but I disconnected it and the post on the starter where it attaches shows grounded. This can't be right, did I somehow fry the starter and now it's grounding to the body of the starter? Help! What is odd is that obviously something wasn't right from the beginning. Do I have a ground somewhere that started this whole mess? Yes I have tried jumping the solenoid with the same results. I believe the Dddddd noise is the positive voltage hitting a grounded starter post, my next step is to return the new starter and try another, BUT I KNOW you Brainiacs will come to my rescue!Thanx in advance

I'd remove the starter and direct hook it up to a good battery with jumper cables and see if it works.Make the final connection at the starter side and keep away from the battery, just in case.

Ok Ok Ok, I just did more testing and I think I've got it. I rechecked the wires on the hot side of the solenoid and I think when I swapped them out I hooked up one that shouldnt have been there. I unhooked it and it cranks over. The only bad things are that I dont know what the wire is, must be supposed to be grounded I guess, and when I tried to directly hook the hot cable to the starter solenoid wire, my distributor harness smoked,{while that wire was still hooked to hot post} obviously grounding when shouldnt? I may have to replace the distrib module or???The only other question is why this all started , unless that same wire moved and touched the hot post?

No John, I'm gonna order some more Hoosier radials. The plot thickens however. I thought it was a wire to the solenoid + post not supposed to be there but now after the smoke came out of the tfi harness I've hooked it to, and not to the solenoid, and the car cranks over both ways. Could something in the harness have been somehow been grounding, then after the smoke cleared[ literally] it's ok? I ran some tests and it looks like the module is ok? and the harness that plugs to the distrib seems ok too. I haven't tried to start it because theres a lot disconnected right now.I also checked all the fuses except the Holley commander and they are fine. Any Ford guys got an Idea on the TFI or spout?

The smoke is built into the electronics from the factory. You should not release the smoke! Some have tried to inject the smoke back in after it's released but seldom works.

Replacement smoke can easily be installed in hard to reach spots with a smoke bender. Any Boy Scout can tell you where to get one !!
