Mickey Thompson 30x9 radial is .13 faster in the 1/4, about .08 faster in the 1/8th than a comparable bias ply.

Does anyone know if a 30x9 radial will fit on an 89' mustang without having to modify the wheel openings? We have a bias goodyear slick 28x9 and it fits no problems. It grows and the radials will grow less so we are thinking it might work. anyone try it before?
another question does anyone make a radial that is 29x9? I guess I haven't done enough research. BH |

Hoosier makes two versions of their 30x9 radial slick, one with 92.5 rollout and one with 94" rollout.

Bob, how close are the 94" roll out tires to the front of the 1/4 lip on your car? I run the 92.5" roll out and have about 7/8" of clearance so the taller tire would be a tad over .5". Since these things don't grow at all I figure that should be plenty. Gettin ready to buy new tires and was thinking of going to the taller one.

Unless a 89 Mustang has a considerably larger wheel well opening than my 85, I doubt that a 9x30 would fit without some trimming. I used to have 9x28`s on 8" wide Weld Draglites with 5 1/2" back space, which required some good hammer blows on the inside, but nothing on the actual openings, but when I switched to M/T 9x29 1`2" slicks, I had to do quite a bit of slicing & hammering on the wheel openings, especially in the front sections.

Rory,
when you switched to the larger tire was it to a radial or still a bais slick? I guess what i'm really asking is did you have to trim to get the tire just to fit in general or did you have to trim it to give the tire room to grow? Also to anyone, How much clearance would I need to make sure I had with a radial? I understand they don't grow much if any at all... would 1/4" be enough?? BH |

I think you would have to trim the wheel openings. I know they would'nt fit on my 84, so if you have an LX Mustang, I think the openings are the same. If you have a GT, the ground effects probably make them even smaller.
1/4" is cutting it pretty close. You would have to check the tire for clearance around the entire tire plus account for any shifting of the body. In my opinion, 1/4" is probably a little close.

I've got at least an inch at the front of the wheel opening. I tried Garrets 92.5's at the end of last year and they looked kinda small ![]()
