Propane units work fine but there are some issues to be aware. They are not nearly as common as gas or diesel. Propane and nat. gas powered engines produce less power than gasoline so the generators will have a lower max output rating than the same unit run on gasoline. I have seen some engines in my shop with much more valve train wear if run on propane. There are 2 types of fuel delivery setups. Liquid withrawal and Vapor. Vapor is more common. If you get your motorhome propane tank filled to high, your generator might not run. It can't get vapor as the liquid level is too high. You then have to bleed off some propane to get the level low enough for the generator supply line to get vapor. Another one I've run across at least twice.....Propane units have a low pressure demand regulator that needs to be vented. If any type of bug decides to nest in your vent, your generator won't run....no fuel supply. This stuff is usually mounted low in the motorhome so you never see it and it is inviting to the bugs. Mice also love generators and they can do a lot of damage. If I had a choice it would be diesel then gasoline and last would be propane.

Ironically, I ran into another racer @ a truck stop who lost first round like I did @ the same race and this conversation came up. He had a deisel pusher and he was trying to sell it, he liked it but said that he had left the track the day before to refuel his propane tank for his generator, it cost him $85 and he said it was already just about empty. You may want to check this out.

When outfitting my new trailer I had the opportunity to purchase an Onan propane generator at a good price. I did some research on it and I was advised against it by several people. I went with gas.

We used to have a nice Diesel pusher motorhome, but the main reason we sold it was the propane generator. They use alot of propane and most RV's dont have a big enough tank to run the generator the whole time you would be at a race. It wasn't a big deal in the spring and fall, but in the summer when we wanted to run the air the whole time, it just didn't work. Unless you have a big generator in your trailer for back up I would avoide a propane generator.

Ive got a generator for sale. generac gaurdian 5500w vtwin. gas. new price is over 2000$ Asking 1400. I don't have the remote start for it but i have the tail pipe and manual for it. Ran a charger, fan, lights, microwave, refrigerator, and AC at the same time and never changed rpm. Plenty of power.

Cool Generator

We bought a new motorhome last year that had a propane generator and we've been kicking ourselves since. I can't go to a division race on thursday and make it through til Sunday unless I really really conserve which sucks in July and August when you want a/c. Plus just the inconvenience of having to find a truckstop or co-op that sells propane when you need it.

By the way...Congratulations to Wendall Keesaer on his Super Rod win at the IHRA National in Tulsa this weekend!!
