Guys, after running your car a couple of rounds, how much do you slow down, if any?

If I make the first run stone cold with no warmup, it's actually .02 faster, then it settles on an E.T. for about 5 rounds, then it may start to pick up a couple numbers when hot-lapping.

Wade , my 283 runs a good .6-.8 hundreths faster when i leave the line at 120 to 130 degrees compared to 150 to 160 degrees. I have tested this purposely just to know if i need it.

When I had automatic if atf got 200-210 temp range car would pickup @ every incremental,I believe that temp is where atf changes viscosity, thinner fluid lets converter flash a little more and made my car pickup.
I always try to cool my car to temp I can get to no matter how quick we run next round. My favorite cooling method was the old pour 5gallons water through engine method that will put temp gauge on peg.Seems no one does that anymore last time I did that I needed to cool car quick I got alot of strange looks.I had friend use big 36''-48'' fan put in front of car after every pass cooled engine water/oil `& trans all pretty quick. I've been bracket racing my 68 Chevelle wagon O Stocker at Irwindale, which is 1/8 mile, and when water temperature is around 110-120,it goes quickest. If it gets around 160-180, it slows about .05-.06.If it gets above 180, the car slows around .11-.12. Next time out, my game plan is not to try to equalize the temperature to suit the dial in,but to monitor the relationship between actual ET and water temperature so as to know what to dial the car in for a given temperature. Water temperature isn't always as easy to control as we might sometimes like to, so knowing what number to hang on the window for whatever conditions I encounter needs to become the game plan. That engine with it's low compression heads likes to die sooner in either bad air or hot conditions moreso than a higher compression engine, anyhow.

My LT1 shows pretty much what Danny Waters says his likes. With two batteries, an alternator, electric water pump and fans, I get get mine cooled back down pretty well while coasting down the shut-down area, coasting on the return road, and sitting in the staging lanes if we have to make back-to-back passes. If I can leave below 120 it repeats pretty well.

If I can get to 120 it repeats. Warmer by 10 or more degrees, add .02-.03 to the dial. Jok |
