Any slant six guys here? I traded my Fairmont and a 302 for a decent 78 Aspen 2dr with the leaning tower of power.

Does it have a single or 2 barrel carb on it? If you want to get an idea on how it would run, take the head off and get it flowed. Then after making that determination, if you can find someone willing and able to do it, get the flow numbers with the intake manifold on, and then with the header on. Get all the numbers through .600" lift. You are going to have to buzz this thing, so since the lift is fixed, everything else is going to have to optimized for mid and top end power. Find someone that can work the valve seats to improve the numbers in the region of the cam's max lift, which should be in the .100 to .400 region. Hone the cylinders with a finish that reduces drag while maintaining excellent seal and oil control. Total Seal has an excellent ring package. Get everything balanced as finely as possible. If legal, get a Fluidamper since it controls the harmonics of that big and heavy rotating assembly better than anything else.
Drop friction and parasitic losses everywhere possible, same with the thermal losses. If the rules don't say anything about barrier coatings, deep cryotreating, Mikroniting, etc., then use them. |

Thanks for all the info guys. The car is keeping the 225, it has a 1bbl on it now, but I snagged a 2bbl and intake from the wrecking yard for $20. I know a 318 might be better, but I want to build a six, and it seems to factor alright. V/SA, here we come...
Big question is, who would you recommend as a cylinder head guy, and who would be good for a cam? |

I used to race slant 6's in the 90's had too many head gasket problems.318 is a MUCH better combo!360 in mine keeps gettin hit with hp. the cylinder head is terrible! but good luck. Schnieder made me a custom grind back in the day and it worked good and use the single outlet header not the dual. just my opinion and experience

Jones Cam Designs can put the cam together (704-489-2449). As for the head, I've been out of the loop for the Mopar folks for a minute. Just give Mike at Jones the headflow numbers and all the other variables he needs and he'll give you the right cam first time out.

Thanks Ed, this intake came off a 79. There's 7 more slant-six Aspen/Volare's in the wrecking yard to raid parts from, in case I made a boo-boo here.
Now, the cylinder head from the 78 is the same in 79, so I am ok there. I see the 79 factors better than a 78, so can I change intake manifolds and any other outside trim differences and call this car a 79? I thought I read about others doing similar things to other cars??? Aspen 7709, what if I may ask was causing head-gasket problems? Was your's in Stock? |

I've seen a 1980 Apsen changed over to a 1976 Volare to run stock (360) it is
just front fenders, grill and tail lights being different. One west coast stock racer in a S/W went from a 360 to the 318 when the HP got added to the 360. If your looking for just a fun stocker stay with the /6, you may also want to go check out the /6 website (google it) and see what info is there. Clifford Ind in Corona CA makes 4 bbr intakes (not for stock racing) and headers for the /6.
