A friend of mine who wants to get into Stocker style LT1 engine, however he does not have the money to have a shortblock built, however he has scored a Kenny Fulk prepared set of heads and Kenny spec'd Bullet cam and FAST dfi from a lt1 stocker. His car is nearly complete and he wants to try it out
What are the rpm limits of a factory LT1 shortblock? I think he would be on borrowed time with this shortblock if he shifted in the camshafts intended rpm range am I wrong? Thanks |

It's not nearly as fragile as you might think. He should replace the rod bolts with quality pieces such as ARP. c |

And I still have a very nice block and crank Tom that would work well for him for cheap! Throw in a set of rods and pistons and he'd be set. Scott

I take it that he is at least going to refresh the short block? As Chuck said, the rod bolts should be replaced. When I first started racing stock, I used all of the factory parts except for the cam and valve springs. I never had any failures.

Chuck, I should have picked up the phone to ask you. My friend is really bucking to run this set-up with the factory built bottom end including the rod bolts. He has found a few examples that have been ran but I feel that they are more exceptions than the rule.

do not use it if it has powder metal rods... they will FAIL even with good bolts...

I wouldn't run it with powdered metal rods either, regardless of what bolt you use. There are WAY too many aftermarket rods you can get plenty cheap to run that risk.

May I impose here with a question------for super stock LT1------can a bowtie block or should I say will a bowtie block work with the LT1 spec motor ???? In other words, is the stock block necessary whether it is stock or superstock application because of head design or for any other reason ????

I don't know if they are legal in Stock. I have one in my LT1 Super Stocker, Dave Layer changed the heads for conventional cooling to work with the Bowtie block when he ported them for me.
