On a 12 bolt diff using a solid spacer instead of a crush sleeve, what is the recommended torque on the pinion nut?
Back-halfing my Malibu. What is the preferred method of attaching sheet metal to frame, other sheet metal, etc.? Welding or rivets? I don't want a rattlely piece of crap. Also, what have ya'll found that works best for sealing joints? Brand names? I was wondering about urethane windshield sealant, any thoughts on that? Thanks for your help. Ken |

When I put new gears in my Moser 12 bolt I use the solid spacer you are speaking of. I do not recall a torque spec in the paper that came with the spacer and shims. What I did is I kept adjusting the number of shims untill I got the pinion bearing preload I was looking for. I tightend it with a impact as you would with a crush sleeve. I can tell you the solid sleeve/shims is the way to go especially if you are setting up a new rear and trying to get the proper pinion depth. It beats the hell out of crushing multiple sleeves while trying to get it just right.

Tight as you can get it, then stake the nut/threads.
I used genuine GM seam sealer, kinda messy, but it works well and hangs in there. The aluminum is riveted in, the steel is spot welded. |
