What is IHRA's take on cylinder head runner volumes?

Cool Re: IHRA Take on Runner Volumes

As far as I can tell, it's always been the tech person's "call" based on his interpretation and that of the head tech person, apparently like in NHRA. IHRA usually follows NHRA's rules with this to minimize any problems with cross-over racers. I would guess that they would continue to do that when any new head rules come out.

So Myron, what have they(IHRA) done on the Crate motor engines about establishing runner volumes?

Wink Re: IHRA Take on Runner Volumes

Woodro I'd say IHRA will make no changes. A couple years ago when the piston rules were changed up IHRA went with stock top on the piston to make the rules more simple.

I just happen to have a couple sets of OEM untouched standard Magnums and R/T heads in my garage. I cant wait to see what they come up with..........GRIN

XTECH man what is that suppose to mean. One thing about it there are some racers that love ratting out other racers on certain things some which are stupid. I love it when a racers starts a conversation knowing he is going to tell the tech guy everything that is said. What do you racers think about that?

Herb.....Ive been around this stuff almost as long as you are old. I NEVER ratted out anyone and never will. Ive fought long and hard years ago (about 10) about this horse s**t to no end with Len Imbrigno, Bob Lang of NHRA and IHRA people but its like talking to a stone wall. When they take the volumes from heads that have already been ported its a friggin' JOKE like most were done in S/S. . Ive also done cylinder heads for racers since 1969 and have seen it all from 22 years of tech inspection. All they need to do is use a CORRECT volume with a + tolerance from a VIRGIN head and let it go. Dont set up a spec. from one of these cars that runs 1.4O under just because the car is owned by a super star. This crap of hiding what goes on will never change until they get the rules written to where the cost of these heads and intake manifolds can become a little less expensive. When the inspectors cannot DQ a part because the way a rule is written it needs to be changed. Just my opinion and we all know what amounts to. ZIP !

Woodro,

As far as the Mopar combos, many, but not all, of the accepted crate motor heads are also used in OEM applications that NHRA and IHRA should have specs for, including runner volumes for SS. So IHRA should use whatever Stock volumes NHRA comes up with. I don't know what GM or Ford crate motor heads can also be found in OEM production cars. I run the 360/300hp Commando (shaft mounted rockers) which IHRA allows any production 340 or 360 head which was originally available with 1.88" intakes. The original crate motors came with 308 production heads and later Mopar had 576 heads as over-the-counter replacements. But the 576 heads were discontinued several years ago. I believe any of the same heads with 2.02" valves installed, as well as the original 894 X-heads, are legal on the 360/360hp version.

But we'll just have to wait and see what NHRA comes up with and if IHRA will adopt the findings. Like in NHRA, IHRA has been making judgement calls on their Stock heads.
