Default Re: 62 Chevrolet, STILL No Traction

Jeff... it's doubtful that your middle name is subtle ... is it ? ! ! !

To the point... and even in that, you think I should continue ? !

Sell the Jag ?
I don't think so !
In the States, you guys couldn't get a series III V12 Vanden Plas. In Canada, they made up about half of Jag's sales here ! ... 87, factory black prairie car, factory Dayton 70 spoke wire wheels...
nope, no can sell !

But all is not as bleak as it was thought it could be.
Heads are off ( I sure wouldn't be able to use the excuse that it takes too long to tear down ! ).

Heads, valves.... un-marked... REALLY good actually.
Camshaft ?... damn near survived ! ground up a bit on the edge of a lobe, but it didn't lose one.
Reciprocating assembly still spins very nicely... no "tight spots".

Cylinder walls ?
Yeah, there's SOME scoring on one side inmost of them ( opposite thrust ).
Nothing really ugly though.
I've been doing engines a LONG time, and I think these, for the most part, will hone out.
It'll DEFINITELY end up at the bitter edge though. I'm at around .071"-.072" now.

I AM a little worried about the crank. Spent a good sum of money on indexing / balance... now .010" / .020".
Main bearings in anything more than .010", are VERY difficult to find. oh... and they're almost $300 !

Oh... Jeff... it should be pointed out...
The problems I'm having, have NOTHING to do with the fact that it's a 409.
The parts that are defective / inopperative / failing... are the BS race car parts ONLY !
In fact, the only thing that is still really good about the car, is the very near rust free, original paint body, and some VERY fine W block castings / forgings !

"Either you overcome adversity or you bail"
you can ask my friends if I've been know to overcome adversity !

I was ready to part this thing out ( race parts FIRST ! ).
But it looks like I got lucky ( tongue in cheek sort of way ).

I'll probably be out for the remainder of the season, but I'm not going to quit ( lack of common sense being the likely reason ).
