With an NA care we like to see 4 to 6%.
Blower car can get away with 8-9%
Anything less than 4 and the engine is all but choked down and doesn't want to accelerate.
Best determination is if your MPH is to high for you ET, then the converter can get looser. If MPH is to low for ET, then you can usually get tighter.
For what it is worth, newer engines in your Max RPM range can get away with more stall / flash than the older engines. IE our Challenger likes 6500-6700 and we cross at 6% slip, at 8300 ish. However it seems like conventional style engines can't flash that high even when they turn the RPM.
