Pack the gum onto the hole around the half the stud.
Tighten the lugs..remove the wheel and measure the impression.
Just like you do with Cylinder Heads and questionable Valve Clearance.
Plastiguage is used for Measuring Crank Bearing tolerances.
It was simple and effective.

I was thinking stone age, like a wooden coffee stirrer and a pencil worst case.
You insert it thru the lug nut hole till it stops, mark it and compare to lug nut shank length. Gum????
