I like your approach of letting your son get his feet wet at 10:90 first ,,,, the racing is just as competitive in S/ST as S/G ,,,, the difference is the MPH , when something goes wrong , seat time and driving experence will get you through most situations without getting hurt and/or wrecking ,,,,,,, I've seen GOOD young drivers get in a lot of trouble when something goes wrong , car comes around , other driver crossing line ,liquids on track , hard braking on the big end , engine failures etc......
I also like your enthusiasm and fresh attitude ,,,, some time I think we whine so much that we forget how forunate we are that we can particpate in this sport !!!
