I doubt of the groove was anything other than a a groove for an o ring in case the bearing is used in applications that may require it. Should not matter which way the groove is in this application.

Thanks. Had not considered being machined for clearance. Makes a lot of sense. Did an internet search for this style fork and found one from Quarter-Max Racing that looks identical, aside from where mine is shaved down. Hopefully I'll have things back together in the next few days.
