Because brake systems years ago consisted of $5 shoes and $3 wheel cylinders that had tolerances measured in .100. Now we have ABS controllers and a variety of materials in brake systems with much closer tolerances. We used to hone and rebuild wheel cylinders with no measurements. Even back them brake hydraulic system failures were usually related to rusting of the cast iron due to brake fluid contamination but parts and fluids were cheap and we junked cars at 100k mi.
