My experience with automotive timing belts is that they really last a long time, especially on a V8 motor. If used on a passenger car it should last 180 K miles, however, generally they should be changed at 90 K.
I suspect that if a belt fails, it is because of the way it was built. Another reason could be lack of use once installed. Yet another could be exposure to the sun's radiation, same as tires.
If you have a spare, package it and store in a cool dark location.
The one's on e-bay, hard to say. I suppose manufacturer's have "bad runs" that should be discarded, but someone saves them for well....
