Default Re: Pontiacs

Since the cars I've been listing are the popular Birds, Goats, & other A-bodies, I thought of mentioning some of the Pontiacs that were not that common.

I always think of the auto trans GTO. Because the only auto trans available in a GTO, up thru '66, was a 2-speed, sometimes called a "Super Turbine 300", I can't find any evidence that many people raced 'em. LOTS of PG equipped Chevy models were raced, but NOT the 2-speed Pontiacs. If any of you guys have info and/or pics of competitive '64-'66 auto trans GTO's, please post it.

Then there are the big 2-door cars from the late '60's. There were LOTS of 'em running in the 1st half of the '60's. But, after the Goats & Birds got popular on strips around the country, there were not very many big cars being raced. I'll re-post the pic of a 428 powered car. How many 428 Stockers have ya'll seen ? If there had been no smaller V8 powered Pontiacs, there would no doubt have been many more 428 powered Stockers.

Then there are the wagons. There have been some nat record holders & big race winners. 4 come to mind. 3 are probably well known to most who have followed class racing since the mid '70's, tho there were probably quite a few more.

(1) Jack Mullins - 389 stick wagon - Sports Nats & US Nats winner in '75, plus other various wins.

(2) Charlene Wood - '72 455 Lemans wagon - "Tons-a-Fun" - Record holder, class winner, big event winner.

(3) Gary Riley - '74 Lemans wagon - Recently won Mile-High Nats - Only currently active Pontiac wagon I know of.

How about 4-door cars ? The only non-wagon 4-door Pontiac I can think of is the "Tijuana Taxi", which was an early '70's model big car.

Have only seen a few A-bodies with the Grand Am nose on 'em. Those that come to mind were raced by Don Elgin, Don Turk, & Carroll Warling. All 3 are still active. Carroll has run his car with a Lemans & a GA nose.

Tommy Brown is running the only '74 Lemans Stocker I've ever seen pics of or even heard of, that I remember.

Billy Nees now runs the only '79 Lemans that I've known of.
