A lot of the people working the claims do have a medical background and can read the medical records of the Vet i.e corpsman, medic. The doctors and nurses are sometimes from the military and understand the problems that arise with Vets (PTSD). I hope I am not rambling but as a former Civil Service HR Manager, GS-13 step 8, I have a little background in the subject matter of recruiting Vets and have hired literally thousands in the Naval SW Region.
Regardless of who gets a position, civilian or veteran, at some point they obtained the skills necessary for the job. When they enlisted they didn't just hand them an M-16 and tell them to go sit in the barracks till we deploy you. There was a lot of time and effort by the military training them for whatever their postion was going to be. At discharge time.. thanks for your service, good luck...isn't enough.

Pryor to discharge ask them if they would be interested in a career with them in administrative/ maintance/grounds keeping whatever. Give them the skills necessary for the position. There is no better education than on the job training.

My Dad was drafted and took basic at Leonardwood, stationed at Carson, and attached to Camp Hale near Leadville,CO. They trained him in mountain warfare. They taught him how to ski, scale rock cliffs, survive in the cold. They asked him to stay on, he declined. Returned home to Minnesota and started a successful business of 37yrs till his retirement. There is so much more to these young men and women if just given the opportunity.
