I don't know what he had, but I've used such compressors from Home Depot and Walmart. I remember them being around $40. But you have the issue of securing it in the car while racing. That's why I use a small bicycle foot pump I keep in the car for in the lanes, which can also be locked in a rather small metal tool box bolted behing my seat. The compressor I use after each race to make sure the tires have enough air the next day after overnight cooling. Then I recharge at the motel.
