I ran into some funky clearance issues mounting an alternator on my Vega sbc/motor plate.Even though our cars have nothing in common, what I did would work for pretty much everybody w/ a common sbc/bbc setup.I used a new GM crank pulley for an 88-96 or so 5.7 tbi motor. It uses a 6 rib serpentine belt.I made up a large reinforcing washer out of 1/4" plate, that has the 4 crank bolt holes in it.I used a late model 92-93 Grand am/Firebird small-case alternator, and fabricated a simple fixed arm/adjustable arm mount system for the alt.It is actually facing the motor, but attached to the frame, not the motor/motor plate. The reverse alternator direction does not affect charging,or alternator heat buildup. It idles at 14.8 volts, and has been run repeatedly up to 7300 rpm.Its cheap, strong, and fairly easy to accomplish if you have a welder and a little skill.Let me know and I'll email you some pics if you want to go this route.-Lew (
