I don't know how much of it was sandbagging and how much of it was sorting out a brand new combination. Rock's car is real fast though. 8.9's in a D car is incredible.
What I DO know is that, similar to Stock, the "old" combo's won't be able to hang with the new Mustangs in SS/AA or SS/BA. The rumor flying around not too long ago was that Ford Engineers claimed those cars make 1000 hp. I've since heard they make more than that. Based on the performance of PB Candies' new Super Cobra Jet in Belle Rose, I have no doubt they'll be wicked fast.
The best Race Hemi motors are approaching 1000 horsepower now, but that's after 40+ years of development. I don't think the new CJ's have even't scratched the surface of their performance potential. Considering that it's currently rated @ 500 hp (same as my Belvedere), I expect them to be running mid 8's before long. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they're as quick or quicker than Daniels' Dart at SS/AA weight. No doubt they'll need to be factored, but I don't think they're as far out of line as the CJ combo's in Stock. The "new" motors already have a lot of the advantages that an SS motor would have over a Stocker anyway.
